Shoulder rests- many people have them, and everybody seems to have an opinion about them.
Some say everyone should use one; others say one no one should have one...
It's a harmful crutch...
It's a helpful tool...
But just what should we do about them, and what place do they have in violin and viola playing?

Let's balance the body first, and bring the violin into that balance
Then, and only then, can we see if we need to place a support under the instrument.
Remember, no two players are built the same; body shapes can differ dramatically.
Some players might need tall shoulder rests; others, not much at all. There is no single answer for everybody.
Your set-up should include what works for YOU.
